I have my new C2D MBP on order and am a switcher from Windows XP and
am wondering if there's any must have software out there, software
that many mac users have. I know with Windows there are a few like
this. Of course I know the mac has more built in programs and is
easier to use so I likely won't need as many programs to buy.
I am undecided if I'll go with Safari for web browsing or Firefox. As
well, for PIM use I'm not sure if I'll use Entourage or ical/address
book/mail
What I will get though are Office 2004 since I do a lot of heavy
office work as well as Macromedia/Adobe Suites since I do graphic
design as well as web design.
Beyond that, I want a program that does good desktop video editing, a
good newsgroup reader, probably will get toast platinum.
I will use my mac at home where I also have a home office and it's
kind of going to be for all kinds of uses, maybe even a occasoinal
game. I just want anything that will make my life even better wtih a
mac. it's coming on Tuesday and I can't wait!
One last kind of unrelated thing. With Windows you can map a drive to
a server computer. I do have a Windows based computer in my house I
use as a server. I hope to switch that to a Mac Pro someday but with
Xp I simply map it as a drive such as drive Z. Can I do the same with
a Mac? I do have a friend who has one but his only complaint is you
can select and log onto a server drive but as soon as you reboot the
computer this drive is gone and you have to redo it each time.

Cannot answer too many but:
(1) Movie editor, you get iMovie and iDVD (if you got a DVD burner)
with the machine. They are very good for most simple and not so simple
projects. If you are into semi-pro or pro stuff then spend the $ and
get Final Cut from Apple.
(2) Versiontracker.com is your friend, it's the first place to look
for mac programs (shareware, freeware).
(3) Now that you use OS X the system shares a lot with Linux and a
lot of Linux and BSD stuff is ported to the Mac. Some of it is pretty
geeky but there is a LOT of very useful stuff.
(4) Firefox-Get it. Safari works very well but somepeople like
Firefox better and for those sites that don't work right in Safari you
have Firefox which usually works.
When you get then MBP one important thing to learn to do is just
close the lid when you have to quit or move to another location with
it. The machine automatically sleeps and just pop it open and you can
continue right where you left off. I rarely power mine (an older G4
12") down, even overnight just close the lid and let it sleep.

Thanks for the advice and good news is shipping must be faster than
expected. I should now get the MBP on Monday and I will be checking
into those web sites and programs.

For video editing, try Apple's iMovie HD which is already installed on
your new MBP. I like MT-Newswatcher for newsgroups. You can download it
at http://www.smfr.org/mtnw/

I will let someone else comment on the Windows XP drive sharing question.

Remain undecided and be even more undecided if you like and look at
OmniWeb, iCab, Camino and Opera as well, or just have them all. However
for bookmark management I thoroughly recommend URL Manager Pro. This
has a great deal to commend it. I've used it for years myself. URL
Manager Pro comes from here:

My suggestion for a good newsgroup reader is the extremely lovely
Hogwasher.
There's actual a number of good newsgroup readers for the Mac so you
might like to try all the suggestions yourself.
