Hi Doc, Do you happen to know exactly how Address Book/Mail.app executes
this? Specifically, are individual emails sent to each person in the
address book? So if you have 100 people in your address book, do you end
up with 100 identical messages in your sent mail box? Or are the
addresses put all into one To:, Cc:, or Bcc: line? If the updates are
sent in one uber-email, Bcc: would seem to be the appropriate line. Does
that happen? The help file doesn't discuss the details of Send Updates.

HTH
It uses the bcc line and sends one message only.
(I tested it for you... ;-)

Thanks, Jon. This seems the smart way to handle the task. but you never
know. I appreciate your efforts. Thanks again.

Been following this thread with interest since I'm moving in the near
future and have dreaded the process.
I tried the File/Send Updates with ALL highlighted in my AB but the
choices were limited to my Smart Group packages only and not everybody
in my AB.
I'm using OS 10.4.8/Mail 2.1(752/752.2).

Hm. I could only select all non-"smart" groups.

Jon -- As they say in politics, I misspoke. I do not have a list of
Smart Groups. On the left side of my main Address Book window I have
ALL followed by a list of seven Groups. When I open File/Send
Updates(with ALL selected), my only choices are the seven groups.
The Info Question mark on this opened page brings you to the AB Help and
talks specifically about sending to groups only and not to everyone in
the AB.
So are we back to the OP's original question?

Only if the OP isn't smart enough to create a new group with everyone in
it for the purpose of the update. I'm not so sure that *that* broad of
a broadcast is a good idea, but the workaround is easy enough.

No problem.

I made a non-smart group called Everyone and dragged all my contacts
into that manually. (Select the default "All" and click one contact,
then Cmd-A, then drag over to the new group). This new group was
eligible for the Update command. I didn't try to send to it, for obvious
reasons as I have not changed my info lately and do not want to hassle
1000+ contacts with an unnecessary test mail, but I see no reason why it
should not work.
