Safari opening new windows under old one

Barry Margolin - 18 Oct 2006 05:33 GMT I'm running Tiger 10.4.8. I'm not sure when it started, but for some time I've noticed that when Safari opens a link in a new window, the window is usually opened under the existing window, rather than on top. This happens when I Cmd-click on a link, or when I click on a link in another application.
I don't see anything in the Preferences that mentions this. Is it an internal preference that I may have set somehow (a few months ago I downloaded a utility that provided access to lots of hidden options, but I can't find it now)?

I have the preference (under General) to Open Links in a new tab in the current window. Why not try this as it may suit you.

On my set up option command click opens another window under, option command shift click opens another window on top, command opens a new tab. That is on Tiger just before 10.4.8

What is there not to like about them? :) I'm simply more used to having multiple overlapping windows and clicking on the one I want to see. I didn't find tabbed browing any easier or more comfortable.

Where I find it useful is in comparing products or in having the css in a tab, the html in another and the actual website page in a third, but as far as I can see there is simply the general advantage of not having to arrange the windows so that you can actually conveniently click on them and not have to remember that the one you want is that a one poking a bit of itself out at the bottom behind this other one etc...
Anyway, I assume you have tried it and given it a good go and it is not to your liking... that is so... it is isn't it? :)

It didn't impress me, so I turned it off, and haven't really considered it since then.

CMD-option-Click should open a new window behind the current one (see the "Tabs" preference). Here, in 10.4.8, new windows open in front.
Is the utility you're thinking of "Safari Enhancer"?

Here, in 10.4.8, new windows open in front. Actually, it's Cmd-shift-click that's supposed to open a window behind. I just tried it, and I noticed something. When Cmd-click does the wrong thing, it seems to act like a pop-under -- the new window seems to appear briefly on top, then go under. But Cmd-shift-click goes directly under.
> Is the utility you're thinking of "Safari Enhancer"? No, it was something more general, that allowed you to tweak lots of Finder settings (e.g. always showing hidden files) and settings for many standard applications like Mail.

The option key then apparently comes into play with tabbed browsing enabled. My error, but I use tabs extensively.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

I've determined that the problem isn't anything I've configured on my machine, because I noticed the same thing when I use my MacBook at work, which I haven't customized much (I've only had it for 2 weeks).
It looks like it's just one site where this happens, the Comcast Help Forums at forums.comcast.net. Links within forum messages automatically open in a new window, and these always show up on top. But there are links in the borders that normally use the same window, and I like to open them in new windows -- this is when they open below.
Could it be something in their CSS? It's a Lithium forum.

This is a known problem with the 10.4.8 update. Go to ~/Library/Preferences/ and delete the file com.apple.finder.plist . BTW it also will show up if you launch applications and the application window goes to the back of the window queue.
