I keep all my music/radio dramas on external disk drives, when I want to
listen to a particular album or radio drama I create a playlist and drag
the files to the playlist window, when I'm done listening I just delete
the playlist. The tunes/radio shows stay where they live on the external
drive.
I don't know about iTunes purchases as my library is made up of my own
collection of CDs, and converted programs from reel-to-reel and cassette
tapes, as well as those old big round vinyl albums.

Launch iTunes.
Open the Preferences window.
Change to the Advanced page and make sure the General tab is active.
Use the Change... button to specify where you want your library to be.
Make sure the "Keep organized" checkbox is checked.
Close the preferences window.
In the Advanced menu, choose Consolidate Library...

Thanks. I finally found those instructions on an ipod-related website.
Everything seems to have gone well, except it took forever to move my
10,000-song database with the Consolidate command.
