Irritations with new macbook

Two irritations with new 13" macbook 2Ghz running 10.4.8:

1. battery icon permanently shows no battery attached, but the battery
is fully charged (5 greens) and the computer keeps running when the AC
power is disconnected. I wouldn't worry about it but it won't start on
the battery, the power adapter must be attached. I have checked an
apple tech advice about resetting the battery
(http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n303319-en) but this only fixes the
problem once and it recurs within minutes.

2. Irritating problem with trackpad - cursor vanishes or freezes
constantly in all text situations, word, excel, mail, safari. Freeze
usually only lasts 1-2 seconds but drives me crazy.

Have others encountered either of these problems? Looks like back to
store?

Yes. Especially the first item, I'd say.

For #2 - yes. I've noticed this quite a bit.

#2 I think I've cracked. Go into keyboard & mouse preferences and under
trackpad prefs uncheck "ignore accidental trackpad inputs". The little
dialog tells you that this "makes the computer ignore the trackpad
while typing" - it does, and for a second or so after you stop typing.
Uncheck it, and the problem goes away.

Thanks, Robby .. I'll give that a try .. though
the "ignore" option does have some advantages.

Well, I decided the trackpad wasn't going to give me the fine control I
need for graphics use, so I just bought a wireless mouse when I bought
my MacBook.

Even so it should _work_. Vanishing or freezing cursor sounds like more
than just lack of sufficient sensitivity to me.

It seems to be related exactly to this from an
earlier msg:

I did as suggested here and the vanishing and
freezing does go away, and with no negative impact
I've found.  However, I believe my iBook works
fine with "ignore" turned on.

BTW .. though I have an external mouse for my
MacBook, I seldom find a reason to use it:
Trackpad works find for me.

So it wasn't lack of sensitivity, it was hypersensitivity! Good, hope
that fixed it. :-)

I just ordered a new battery after I found out that Apple is asking us
to do so due to overheating situations.  I would go and order a new
battery.

I've seen nothing about a MacBook battery recall.
 Is there one?

They replaced mine when it went in for another reason.
