iTunes loads library, checks gapless every time; normal?

Every time I open iTunes 7, it seems to re-load the library, which
takes about half a minute or more, and does a gapless check, which
takes several seconds. Is it normal for this to happen every time? Did
not happen in previous versions. Thx. Ed

The slow library loading is normal for iTunes 7.  You'd think that
processors running at Gigahertz speeds wouldn't have a problem with such
things, but Apple managed to make it slow anyways.  Congratulations to
them.

I don't know about the repeating gapless check.  I always cancel it.
Why can't Apple figure it out by pre-loading a bit of the next song?
Again, it seems like Gigahertz processors should be able to stitch the
songs together before the audio buffer runs out.

You have to let it finish the gapless check if you don't want it to keep
bugging you every time.  It must've took 10-15 minutes the first time I
started iTunes 7, but I waited until it was completely done (6361 songs
in my library).  It hasn't done anything like that since then.

Patience is rewarded. :-D

I have significantly more songs and they're on a private file server.
My wired desktop might complete the scan in a couple of days.  My laptop
might get it done in a couple of weeks if it's near the WiFi base.  My
work computer will need maybe 8 months to do the scan across the
Internet.  To make matters worse, iTunes is still based on a decades old
software programming model so it's mostly locked up during the scan.

Patience can be a waste of time if it's spent waiting for sh.t-poor
software (to put it nicely) to complete.  Removing iTunes 7 and
reinstalling iTunes 6 was MUCH faster than waiting for the gapless scans
to finish.

I won't argue with you there but what I do when I want to share my
iTunes library with other computers is just have the iTunes software
installed on the primary computer (Mac Mini) with all my 6361 songs
loaded on it and if I want to share it to other computers I just start
the MyTunesRSS 2.2.4 server on that and connect to the Mac Mini remotely
(either wirelessly via my PSP and wireless router, wired to my PC with
the browser pointing to the appropriate IP address, or if I wanted to,
over the internet with the browser pointing to the appropriate external
IP address).

Much easier than installing and running the same bloatware iTunes on
multiple machines.  I like using iTunes for managing my local library
where the tracks are actually located but not remotely.  Too much
overhead.  Easier to use a browser and connect to the MyTunesRSS server.
Less processor and RAM wasted.

This way would probably work better for you with your even larger
library unless you really need/prefer all the album cover art and extra
features that MyTunesRSS doesn't have and iTunes does.
