I have my Mozilla 1.3.1 preferences set so that I don't have to type the
http://www. or the .com in a URL. Until last week this worked. Now though, when
I type in a Web address without them, I'm taken to a search page using what I
typed as a search term. That is, if I just type in "apple," I don't get to
Apple's Web page, I get search results for "apple."
At first the search engine was itemnotfound.com. I did some Googling, and while
I did not find the reason for this I found I could opt out, so I did. Now it
takes me to search.msn.com. I can find no way to opt out of this one.
My first guess was that this might be something my ISP was doing, but it only
happens with Mozilla, not in iCab. (I just checked and found that the same thing
happens with Internet Explorer.)
I tried reinstalling Mozilla from a backup done before this problem cropped up,
to no avail.
I'm running OS 9.2.2 on a beige G3.
Any ideas what might be causing this, and how I can stop it?
TIA

Your ISP is doing this. Their DNS server isn't sending back an error
code for the domain 'apple'. Because of this, Mozilla never gets around
to adding www. or .com.
