Weird. I am trying to set up a second account on the same POP server.
Both the first and second account have exactly the same POP server. The
username and passwords are both different for the two accounts. Mail
just won't set up the second account. Sheesh!

Have you set up the email address of the second account with Bellsouth,
it may be that email address is not available.

When you say "set up the second account," do you mean you're literally
trying to set it up, from scratch, in Mail? Or do you mean you've
already established it with your mail provider and you're just trying to
enter that info into Mail? If it's the former, that's your problem--the
account already has to exist. Mail (or any email client) can only
access an account, not create one.

The account is already set up with my provider. I can access the account
just fine from the webmail location for the account. No problems there.
This morning mail.app *finally* authenticated the POP and SMTP servers
and completed the account. I have no idea why it failed yesterday.
thanks for all of your inputs on this irksome problem!

I have that on my Mac, and have had it for years (literally). No
problems whatever. But the accounts themselves have different names,
though?

Yeah, I have several different accounts with my ISP, one POP server, and no
problems here up through 10.3.9.

"Mamamia", let me just join Mike R. in stressing that Mail has to relate
to an _existing_ account on the server. I hope that is clear for you?
Mail in and of itself will not set up a new account for you on the
server, just fetch and send mail to and from an account that is already
there. God luck!
