My iMac (DV, purchased in 2000, OS 9.1.2?) \simply won't launch
Explorer anymore. As soon as I click on the alias or another program
invokes Explorer, the startup screen for MSIE appears, and my cursor
freezes within seconds.

I know the cable modem connection is fine, because AIM still works and
my wireless network is giving me access to the same connection via a
Windows laptop right now.

Any suggestions? Should I uninstall and reinstall?

Try increasing the memory allocation to Internet Explorer.  Quit Internet
Explorer, then locate the Internet Explorer application icon.   Select it,
then go to File -> Get Info -> Memory.  Set the Preferred size to 25000K,
then close the window.

Did you try deleting these files?
HD:System Folder:Preferences:Explorer:Downloads.html
HD:System Folder:Preferences:Explorer:History.html
HD:System Folder:Preferences:MS Internet Cache

If that doesn't help, it could indicate a corrupt Internet Preferences file.
Drag Macintosh HD:System Folder:Preferences:Internet Preferences to the
Desktop.  Re-launch Internet Explorer and see if it crashes.  If it still
does, move the Internet Preferences file back.  If it does not, you can
trash the Internet Preferences file.
