Hi.

For the past month or so, I have been unable to access Paypal, eBay's
online payment system.  When I enter it, all that shows are the
headers and (sometimes) a warning box appears saying "Security
failure. Data encryption error."

In case it was a problem with my browser or OS, I updated both to the
newest my elderly Powerbook would take - OS 9.2 and IE 5.1.7 - to no
avail.

Paypal suggested I configured my browser to accept all cookies without
asking (it is), check that it has 128-bit encryption (it does) and
clear out all the cookies in case any were corrupted (I did, more than
once).  Finally they said:

"If you are encountering difficulties using Internet Explorer on Mac
OS
9.x and below, we ask that you consider using a different browser at
this time. The error you are encountering is a well-known and
documented issue with Internet Explorer's inability to recognize valid
security certificates.  Approximately one year ago, Microsoft
announced the end of development for future versions of the Internet
Explorer browser for the Mac. With this in mind, you will want to
begin looking at various alternatives available for your Internet
browsing needs."

Are they right, or is there something else I can try?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hi --- I have an old PowerMac 6500 with OS 8.1 and Internet Explorer
5.1. Basically going to PayPal now causes  Interner Explorer on my Mac
to immedicately quit, and actually many eBay pages freeze it.  I miss
this good old days of eBay when their site would load on the oldest,
most wretched computer with no problem. I guess I shouldn't complain,
I've saved a lot of money by rarely bidding on anything because of
these problems :-) When I do sell every now and then, I have to go to
a nearby public library computer to withdraw funds from PayPal. One of
these days, I'll get a new computer, but it's a shame that eBay can't
keep their site simpler and available to those of us who are a bit
behind the times!

Alan,
I have same problem on secured sites as banks etc. Anyone give you a
fix? Netscape 7 solved problem but I don't like it. Mail me if you
have heard anything.

Thanks,
Gary

Just tried logging onto Paypal and had no problems using IE5.1.6 and Mac
OS7.6.1

It doesn't work with Netscape 4.77

I agree with Sheri about eBay - I liked it more when compatability was
better. As of earlier this year eBay unexpectedly quits Netscape 4.77, it
works fine with IE but is rather sluggish.

Opera 5 is an alternative which seems to work with Paypal & eBay but I
don't like it and it's so slow.
