I have a problem getting full features of some web sites using IE5.1
(Mac OS 8.6.3).  Could this be due to a problem running Java, and if
so, how can I correct it?

A couple of factors may be happening.

First, the Web sites you're attempting to render may have made a
techno-political decision to only make sure their sites work on IE for
Windows. Many sites written in such fashion simply don't work well, if
at all, using a Mac and any browser (including IE for Mac).

Second, the relative obsolescence of your OS and its accompanying Java
VM may also be at fault. Unfortunately, the way Apple bundles Java with
the OS, you may find your only choice is to upgrade the OS to a newer
version.

But, in any event, just a reminder that Microsoft has stopped all work
on IE for Mac. They will be providing no more updates. So, even if you
did manage to upgrade your OS/Java, IE for Mac may still not be able to
render those sites properly.

If you're not ready to upgrade your OS, you may want to give the
Netscape 7.02 Navigator suite a try. Perhaps it can do something with
those sites.
