IE 5.1.7 is superior to IE 5.0, and I would recommend that you download and
install it.
Error type -39 ("end of file") means that the downloaded file is not
complete. Simply trash it and download another copy, then try again.
If you're feeling brave, OS X is excellent, much better than OS 9.x in my
opinion. If this does not suit your needs though, then OS 9.1 is perfectly
fine too.

Thanks for your reply. I've tried twice to download it but the
download manager says the process was interrupted after 47 or 54
minutes. What can I do to make the process complete? (am also having
problems w/web pgs being completed on AOL; don't know if these 2
problems are connected or what). Thanks again for any help.

That's a long time for a relatively small file download, even on dial-up!
Normally, I'd look at modem configurations, but in this instance, your
connection speed might be limited by the quality (or rather, the lack of
quality) in your modem cable and/or phone line. If these aren't up to
scratch, your connection speed and stability can suffer significantly, as it
appears is apparent in your case.
I wonder if you could, as an experiment, fire up a connection to a different
ISP on your machine to see if its speeds are a significant improvement over
what is witnessed through your AOL connection? This might serve to
highlight potential cable / phone line issues.
