Troubles with ? marks and Chinese characters

I work for a large UK bank who provide an online sharedealing facility
for our clients.  I am part of the team that provides IT support to
our customers.

Recently a client with a new Apple laptop (< 1 month old) called to
say that he was having troubles with accessing a few pages on our
site, and that he was seeing random question (?) marks and chinese or
other foreign characters.

I have checked his language settings and they all seem fine.  I have
been unable to recreate the problem on our mac here, although we did
hear of another call about a similar thing, but it was not passed to
us.

In order to properly recreate, I downloaded the latest version of IE.
When installing it the disclaimer was all in funny characters, but the
actual pages rendered fine.

I have been unable to find any reference to this in any newsgroups or
websites, so any help any one could provide would be appreciated.

I have the SAME exact issue with some of my clients !!! when they use
MAC 10.3 and IE 5, one secure page displays ? marks and Chinese
characters.

Can anyone HELP?
