IE7 .url Icons - Story II

Bruno.H. - 16 Oct 2007 03:19 GMT Every single MSWinXPSP2 PC from the day IE7 was officially deployed has one huge but tiny problem, as many knows also on this Discussion Groups to change default and for many years know icon for all .url Icon Shortcuts, for e.g., in Start Menu to some Icon Shortcut "not recognizable association".
I allready read and try everithing that is mentioned in ".url icon" 8 posts here and nothing helps on more than one PC tryings...
I repeat once more, it is not problem with some favicon here, it is a problem when the all .url Shortcut icons is Start Menu from the day that IE7 is installed to the present date is changed to this "nice icon" easiliy and the most simply described with common language, when Windows OS has some extension of some file but still not reffer / associate to anything of the software that support that kind of format yet. So', how this "not associated" icon look: Well, it is a first icon picture in the upper left (corner) side of the window when you, for example goes to change some icon and look some another, but do this into default location for that, and that will be on MSWinXPSP2 the: "SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll The first icon shown here in the upper left part of the "Change icon" window is the exact picture how is all .url icon changed after IE7 is installed and to the present date.
And, finally, what is this ".url icon" means, and why we call that as .url icon... Well, if you install, for e.g. werry well known "SiSoft Sandra" Benchmarking software. You will get normally with this installation a few Shortcut icons in Start Menu. First, it will be an icon Shortcut for the Sandra executable it self. Rest few icons will be Shortcuts to SiSoft Sandra Web page - it ends with .url extension if you go to check "Properties" on that links here. In IE6, this all .url Shortcut icons in Start Menu was associate with IE6 default icon -An "e "sign.... In IE7, this all .url Shortcut icons in Start Menu are associate with this mentioned icon that is shown as the first upper left icon in SHELL32.dll / "Change Icon" Window.
The offul thing is even more ironic, when all this kind or .url Shortcuts (for every single installed Software on that particullar PC), in Start Menu have the same problem, and any new installed Software of any kind on every PC that has IE7 installed... All this .url Shortcuts is changed to this not-associtaed icon - first upper left icon in SHELL32.dll / "Change Icon" Window.
So, what I am force to do from IE7 was brought on the market. I manually need and force to change every single .url icon to downest icon in the "Change icon" window, but using this adress: C:/Program Files/Internet Explorer/iexplore.exe . It is a boring, samefull thing to do all the times, all this months, on all PC's, etc... What I hate the most, nobady did not resolve efficient / permanatelly this problem yet, and to be worse, every single new installed software I need to do all this Change Icon procedure again, again, again...
Ironicly, I think that is a problem with some nice and so easy registry change input, but I am not so experianced to find it by myself.
If someone still does not understand what it is this .url icon and why we called like that, or what it is this "NO association" icon or similar as I called it, I will try to make it clear once more as soon I get any Reply on this all here...
To be apsolutelly honest, I sincerely doubt that nobady from the professionals did not see this kind of problem just every single time after IE7 isntalled on any MSWinXPSP2 based PC. This problem is so iritating, anoying and instantly reviled that I cannot believe that people cannot understand what users talking about on so mutch forums over Net about this for about a 1 year in the past!!!
The most difficult is explained here is, what is this .url icon and what is this icon not associated with anything...
Well, like I allready said, I will try do desribe this problem if anyone answered and still do not understand. This is not hurd to explain, but, we users lack of expert terminology and use common termines instead. I try to described with "picture conotation" insetad this time and example with Sandra and etc... :-) I'll hope it helps :-)
Finally, like I also said, I allready read and try anything described on ".url icon 8 posts" here on this Discussion Groups, so' if anybody has some other idea, or magic stick how to resolve this in one simple way, I will be thankfull for a year time - and that is a time that I hanging on with this problem, and every single friend, persona that I know and talking about this litlle bugy thing, anyone does not know how to resolve this on proper way :-)
We are just useing cheapest cheats on Earth to resolve this manually, but we all feel like stupid ones...
THANKS EVERBODY FOR ANY HELP AND ADVICE IN ADVANCED!!!

:-)
> It is just simple mistake, I gess I was so tired that I did not pay enough > attention... It ahppens to all of us. In addition, if you are using the web interface to access these nntp newsgroups, the GUI provided by MS on their site is horible IMVHO and leads to a lot of similar confusions.

Bruno.H. - 18 Oct 2007 16:39 GMT Dear Corentin;
All this problems here with this .url icon - finally I know the right word for it and not the "not associate" common described icon, and the right word for this icon is a "Generic icon" :-) I am a shamed, because I work with Computers more than 20 years, and I did not know the right word for this icon :-)
Anyway, when you cross my mind that I post this on wrong part of Discussion Groups, I do it again on proper one, in "nternet Explorer General".
So', you are also more than welcom to goin us into ".url icon story II" discussion via:
http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?query=ie7+.ur l+icon&dg=&cat=en_US_d02fc761-3f6b-402c-82f6-ba1a8875c1a7&lang=en&cr=&pt=&catlis t=&dglist=&ptlist=&exp=&sloc=en-us&mid=099b2fbc-427b-4c14-b5b1-228a8e0e08d5
Now we have 10 posts, still none helps to resolve this, but people and MVPs are really helpfull and polite, and they finally got the problem more seriously and really trying to understand on what Icon I telling about, because till today I described all this with my Common "not associate icon" instead professional terminology - "Generic icon" :-)
Finally now, they have even a picture how this icon looks like from http://hk.geocities.com/mawingpui/url_link_problem.png and I found this nice link via: http://www.eggheadcafe.com/software/aspnet/30600372/url-icon.aspx
I am just glad that more people have this problem. Why? First of all many people are litlle bit easier that have problem to shared with somebody. Second, more professionals and MS will heard about it so' maybe they will resolve this till MSWinXPSP3 :-)
Best regards from Bruno.H.!!!

Hehehehehe. It gives me a "Service Temporarily Unavailable We apologize for this inconvenience. Please try again later."
:-> I love the webpages mirroring nntp (I use an nntp client to get to the newsgroups - I never use a webpage for that).
I saw some interesting replies on www.eggheadcafe.com (on the linkn you mentioned). I hope some of them will help you solve the issue.
Without knowing much about Windows, I would guess it's either 1) a cache problem - and you need to rebuild the icon cache or 2) an association problem (that's usually what it ends up being when it happens on a Mac anyway.
