I can't get IE 5.2.3 to launch. I'm running OS 10.3.9 on a 15"
PowerBook G4. Relevant observations:
I have two "accounts" on this computer. IE launches successfully on
one, but when I "switch desktops", IE won't launch on the other. 2 to
3 seconds into the launch, it prematurely quits.
I may never have launched IE on the problem desktop (I don't use it
much). I notice in the Preferences folder in the Home folder for the
problem desktop, there is NO preference file for IE
(com.microsoft.explorer.plist). There IS an Explorer folder. There is
NO MS Internet Cache folder in the Caches folder.
I've tried removing the com.apple.internetconfig.plist file, removing
the Explorer file, repairing permissions, moving the preference file
from the other desktop into the problem desktop. Nothing works. Seems
the oddest thing is the lack of a preferences file (of course, there
IS a preferences file in the Home folder library of the desktop where
IE works).
Any clues, anyone?

It must be the preferences then.

That's really weird. I don't see why that would be.
There might be a problem witht he Explorer folder,. you can trash it and
try again.
Out of curiosity, I wonder what would happen if you copied the .plist
and Explorer folder from the other session and tried launching it again,

Hum, I see you tried that already,

It really muist be a pref in this account that intereferes. You could
try moving more rpef files to a temporary folder to see if it helps.
It could be some of the com.appl plists that control something that
Explorer needs (a wild guess I know, but it has to be something like
that).
You wouldn't by any chance have a different se of items in
~/Library/Internet Plug-in ni the two accounts??
An Input Manager maybe??

I tried removing all but the Explorer sub-folder from the Preferences
folder, and restarting. IE still failed to open. When IE attempts to
open, the blue startup window appears briefly, for 2-3 seconds. Then I
notice a small window starts to open above the startup window for a
split second before it crashes. The small window looks more like a
warning or error message type window.
The Plug-in folders on both desktops are empty.
I also set up a new user account to test IE. It failed to open in the
new account, exhibiting the same behavior.

Any chance it could be a directory damage issue?? Did you check the hard
drive lately (you can always boot on your MacOS X install DVD and use
DiskUtility from there to make some repairs if need be).

I repaired the directory with DiskWarrior, then repaired permissions.
No change.
I also downloaded a fresh copy of the IE 5.2.3 application, thinking
there might be a corruption in the app. Now NONE of the user accounts
open IE.

There is something awfully wrong. I suspect something used by Explorer
in the System is corrupted (since it is not somethign in the User
accounts themselves).
I have never seen that before (and I can run explorer on a MacPro).
Do you have any other app (possibly Internet-related) that also
misbehaves?

No other applications are misbehaving. I very much appreciate your
time and help.

I realy don't know what it would be then.
COuld you try deactivating Internet Plug-ins in /Library then?? Maybe
one fo them makes the app crash.
Do you get crash logs?
(and if yes, the log might share some indications on what's causing all
this).

No, I don't find any crash logs connected to IE, in either account.

Hi, Corentin. I'm back from a long weekend. Once again, I appreciate
your time and patience.
No, nothing shows up in the Console when I try launching IE. There are
no new line items.
cbagley@cruzio.com - 04 Sep 2007 20:29 GMT
Corentin:
I finally found an answer that works: You suggested it several posts
ago, and I missed it, thinking I had done it earlier. There's another
Internet Plug-Ins folder in the main Library folder, which I ignored
earlier. By temporarily removing all the files in that folder, IE
starts up again. Oddly enough, after moving all the files back in
place, IE STILL starts up.
Apologies missing the suggestion earlier. Thank you for your time and
attention.
