Where to download Mac IE?

Please accept my apologies in advance for this dumb question, but I am
unable to find a download for Mac on the Microsoft site or MacTopia. Is this
now a purchase-only produce? Or am I simply overlooking it?

Thanks in advance,
Mike Willner

MS purely abandonned IE for Mac a few years ago.
You can still find the old versaion on a few mirrors:

No, just dead.

Mike,
This hasn't been supported for quite a while.
Last version for OS X was 5.2.3.
It may be available from some mirror sites, see some other posts here.

Yours was about the only genuine Mac question in this group.

This answered my question. Wish I'd looked here sooner as it would've saved me 45 minutes of frustration trying to find the download. Perhaps the Mactopia site could put the following sentence in its download section: "Internet Explorer for Mac is no longer available." Presto: I'd get the point and move on (cursing Apple a bit for devising its own browser that has made it impossible for me to fill out a federal job application on line--since the pdf can only be opened through Internet Explorer--without the inconvenience of using someone else's PC!)

You can force Safari to pretend it is IE. You can also do that in
FireFox and OmniWeb. It allows you to get through most of these
ridiculous messages.

It's always the server's fault by the way: Most of the time it's either
because the webmaster has validated IE and refuses to spend an extra
minute considering other browsers exist, or because the site uses
ActiveX (a Microsoft-only technology),
In both cases, it's because they are not using standards when they code
their pages.

I ALSO HAD THE PROBLEM WHEN APPLYING FOR A TSA JOB. HOWEVER, I SWITCHED TO
FIREFOX ON MY MAC 10.5.1, (WITH A BROKEN SHIFT KEY) AND IT WORKED!

What a brilliant discovery! How does one "force Safari to pretend it is IE."? I always run into these same ridiculous messages. Would be fantastic to learn how to get around this!

Open up Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app) and paste in:

    defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu 1

Relaunch Safari and you'll have a Debug menu. The second choice is what
you're looking for.

TinkerTool can do it for you too (and let you access many other hidden
features in the System as well).
A nice little application well worth having on your Mac (and free).

The open terminal didn't work for me... I did get the debug menu and I choose the browser that I wanted but the site that I'm trying to use still didn't work for me. This is very frustrating.

This didn't work for me either and now I'm having problems with Safari on websites that worked perfectly before. Is there any way to "undo" whatever it was that I did in Terminal so that my machine returns to its previous state?

Replace the 1 with a zero.

The Debug menu default setting for User Agent is "Automatically Chosen".

Firefox maybe a useful alternative, with an extension, you could change the
"User Agent" to suit a particular site.

Okay, so I'm trying to find a way to use ACT! on the Mac, as I'm consulting with a firm that uses it. I don't have an Intel chipset, so I've got Virtual PC which is slower than sin. The ACT! admin suggested using the web browser version, but when I try in Safari, it says "Unsupported Browser.

The browser you are using is incompatible with our Web site. This application requires that you use Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher.

Warning: Using any other browser type or version to access this site may result in Web page errors and other unexpected results."

When I try it in Firefox, I can input my username and password, but when I click on the "Login" button, the button simply fades a bit in color, but nothing happens.

As the ACT! admin is paid for their time, and I'm the only Mac user, does anyone have any suggestions on how to handle the situation? I'm posting here since IE is no longer supported, thinking this forum may know better. Thanks!

I fear that they are using Active X commands simply not supported under
MacOS X.
IE supports some ActiveX, but it vastly outdated. No other Mac browser
support ActiveX.

You might have to contact the Act! tech support...

I came to this discussion because we have a mixed Mac/PC office and I've just recently upgraded the Macs to OS 10.4.11 and trying to get the most useful versions of the applications we use. About a year ago I "went to the dark side" and switched my computer to a PC running Vista. I don't have these cross-platform problems but miss my OS 10. Actually, still have a Mac in my office to do some things.

Some of my staff have had some web site issues due to old version of IE but mostly we get around it, but it only can get worse from here on. I'm trying to establish whether to put everyone on Firefox, or leave them with IE. Does anyone have experience or firm feelings on this issue? I'd love to get some advice. Thanx

Well here is the situation.
IE for Mac is dead and stuck at version 5.2.3. It's outdated and the
rendering engine is really showing its age. It also is a PPC-only
application. On the other hand, it's the only applciation that can run
(some) ActiveX on a Mac.

Firefox has a decent rendering engine. THe UI is not really as
Mac-firendly as it could, but it's not bad either. FireFox is also
really really really expandable. Zillions of add-ons have been designed
for it.

Safari is pretty fast nowadays and I like its rendering engine. Faster
and better integrated than FireFox. Some sites seem to do better in
FireFox though.

I personnally have all of the above browsers on my Mac (for various
testing and compatibility issues), but my default browser is OmniWeb. I
love the interface and they added some refinements not yet found in any
other browser.

In your situation, I suspect you could be fine with either FF or Safari,

I guess you can still find it through Google, but it has long been
abandonned by MS.
They don;t even provide it on their site anymore.

Where did you download it from?? It came in which format??
You might need to expand it if it was an archive (Use Stuffit Expander)
or mount it if it came on a disk image (a double-click should do ).
Then you'll need to copy the application in /Applications I guess.
You have to be aware that the application is terribly outdated by now.
Unless you have specific needs that only this app can fulfill, you might
be better of with any of the other current browser (and we have
plenty.... Safari, FireFox OmniWeb, Camino, iCab, Flock, Shiira, Devon
Agent......)

For Mac OS 9??
On most machines, it is as far as you can go.
On machines with Mac OS X installed, I believe you can go all the way to
9.2.1.

I just got my first MacBook, and I tried the whole trick through Terminal and nothing happened. I'm using Firefox as my main browser, so I don't mind messing with Safari. I don't think I'll have any huge problems, but I have run into pages that don't work with Firefox and I'd like to get around the problem before I encounter it. Is there any other way to get some sort of IE thing? I was using Firefox on my PC, and there was an add-on for an IE tab - that won't work with a Mac OS, but does anyone know of anything similar?
Corentin Cras-Méneur - 15 May 2008 22:47 GMT
> that won't work with a Mac OS, but

The Debug hidden option in Safari can make it pretend Safari is IE.
OmniWeb has site preferneces where  you can set this for a specific site
(very convenient).

If the site is using ActiveX, you are out of luck. There is simply no
workaround for this (and I find outrageous that any site would be using
propriietary technologies for something like that, de facto excluding a
repectable number of people from accessing their site. Either they don;t
care or they are negligent or incompetent, but it doesn't reflect well
on them IMVHO).

Would it be impossible for MS to develop an Active X plug-in for
Safari/Mac OSX browsers? ...Or is Active X a deep-down-in-the-operating-system type thing?

No clue, and MS is not posting here at all.
Even if it is doable, I fear that they have no incentive to spend the
resources to do it though...
