Does anyone know if it is possible to access Microsoft Office Live
from a Mac? I am told that the major stumbling block is that Office
Live (Microsoft) calls for or sends ActiveX controls which are not
available on most of the Mac browsers. Do you know of a workaround
other than running PC virualization software on the Mac? Thanks.

I don't believe it is.
Their server says:

I suspect they heavily rely on ActiveX indeed and we have no way around
that.

Well of course. With either Parallels or VPC or anything like that you
could use Win:IE.
