Can't connect to where I need to go

maygray@telus.net - 18 Nov 2006 19:15 GMT Hello, I was given an I-mac (1999 edition) with 0S 9.1 and Internet Explorer 4.5. I'm having a problem with some sites and am looking for any advice. Two examples of problems: I can connect to any one Amazon site, but when I try to link to their sister sites I get the message: "The specified server could not be found". Second example is that I'd like to view You Tube, but I need to update my Flash Player. When I go to the Flash Player download site and press "download" I get the message: "The requested URL was not found on this server". My server says this is something to do with settings on my computer and both Apple and Microsoft directed me here as they don't support these products any more. I am new to this system and computers in general so any help would be a real lifesaver!

(try iCab).
Also, I suspect there was a later version than 4.1 for MacOS 9.1. Maybe even 5.2. You might want to try to look for it on the web (providing you can use your browser of course ;-) ) to update the version you have.

My server says this Adobe doesn't offer a Flash Player for "Classic" MacOS anymore. The web page for the "classic" Flash Player still exists, but the download link for the Classic Flash player is no longer valid. You may ask Adobe to correct the download link. But probably they don't care anymore about the "classic" MacOS.

But probably they don't care anymore about > the "classic" MacOS. The last Flash version available is 7r63. I found it by going to the Adobe Flash Player download page, which automatically detected that I was using a Mac OS 9 browser. On the page, it explained that Adobe was no longer supporting "classic" OSes (such as OS 9 or Windows 98/ME). It provides a download link to the last version, mentioned above.
The problem is, it seems the Adobe Flash Player download site is a "movable" target; one in which the URL isn't constant. I would suggest getting to it the long way by going to http://www.adobe.com and digging through the site.
As for the original poster's issues, OS 9.1 is still a viable OS, but IE 4.5 is too old. Upgrading to IE 5.1.7 will give her some ability to see most sites, but even that version is becoming too old (that's the last IE version made by Microsoft, if it can even be found to download... Microsoft no longer makes it available on their site).
iCab 3.0.3 ( http://www.icab.de/ ) is still being developed for Mac OS 9.x and will run on her iMac. It does work much slower than IE, but for some web sites using the latest eye candy, it may be the only answer in terms of being able to use the site.

It has always be snappier than IE on my Mac (under MacOS 9).
iCab is a great browser for MacOS 9 IMVHO.

Oh, I have no issue with iCab 3.0.3 working on any of my Mac OS 9 systems, it usually does without problems. My issues are with speed.
I've found that for simpler web sites that still work with IE 5.1.7, iCab takes up to three times longer to load the page than IE. This performance is consistent between both my PowerBook G3/266 and PowerMac G4/400.
It's enough of a performance drain that I'll first attempt to load any site with IE. Only if and when a site chokes IE I'll go to iCab. I know that eventually, iCab will be the only browser that works consistently as sites progress their technology, but by then, my OS 9 computers may be RIP.

maygray@telus.net - 26 Nov 2006 18:44 GMT Thanks to all of you who offered advice! I can connect to everything on the internet so far except the Amazon links and the You tube site. I took your collective advice and downloaded i-cab. So far, I really like it; for me it's much faster than i.e. and I find it more user friendly, although i haven't yet worked with it's storage systems, etc. As for flash player, I was able to download a version for "Classic macs" but alas, still no access to the You tube grail. Upon rereading your posts, It sounds as though You Tube is completely inaccessible with an OS 9.1 operating system. Is this correct? By the way, my i.e. is 5.0, not 4.5 as I stated in my original query. So although my original problems are still not resolved, I thank you for your comments! Colleen

To be honest, I don't quite know how to install or upgrade the Flash component of iCab. Whenever I run the Flash installer, it lists all of my other browsers (IE and Netscape) but doesn't include iCab. Perhaps instructions for installing and/or updating plug-ins specific to iCab are available on its Web site?
I haven't played too much with iCab myself. I've installed it and used it a few times when IE couldn't get the job done. But I've not yet attempted to use iCab on a modern multimedia based site such as YouTube.
Regards,
Steve

Whenever I run the Flash installer, it lists all of > my other browsers (IE and Netscape) but doesn't include iCab. Perhaps > instructions for installing and/or updating plug-ins specific to iCab > are available on its Web site? This is a major failure of the Flash installer. It just ignores all browser with the exception of 2-3 "major" browsers (IE and Netscape 4). Another issue of the Flash intallet for the "classic" MacOS is that it refuses to install the plugin where it belongs to. Instead of installing the plugin into the public "Internet Plug-ins" folder of the system folder, where all browsers can find it (with the exception of the old Natscape 4.x), it insists on installing the plugin into the private(!) Plugins folder of these 2-3 "supported" browsers only. So if you're not using IE or Netscape 4, you have to install the plugin for IE or Netscape 4 and then copy the plugin manually where it belongs to: into the "Internet Plug-ins" folder in the system folder. Then all browsers can use the plugin.

Thanks for the insight, Alexander. I haven't tried the "public" Internet Plug-ins directory yet. I'll give that a shot and see if iCab picks up on the plug-ins.

From what you are saying, it sounds like I should be able to get an upgraded Flash installed in my "Classic" MacOS using IE 5. Sorry if my following question sounds really dumb but I am a complete novice and I've not found any answers in my help menus: Could you please explain specifically how to get a newer version of Flash (for "Classics") onto my IE? I just can't seem to figure it out and get it working! Many thanks in advance, Colleen

The installer *should* (I haven't tried it - I don;t have classic anymore) in the proper folder so that you can use it in IE or in any other browser (like iCab, Netscape...). If it still doesn't install the plug-ins for iCab, you can copy the plug-ins from the IE pinternet plug-in folder to the shared plug-in folder that resides in the Ssytem folder (sorry I don;t remember the exact name of this folder.... but it's th internet plug-in folder used by all other apps).
As you can see from the Flash page, the version you can download is much older than the current version for MacOS X. You will probably find websites that require a newer version of the flash player than this one, but in the meanwhile, it can give you access to quite a few resources.
