IE 5.1 with Mac OS 9.1 problems

Hi folks,

I've yet to enter the 21st century, still using OS 9.1 and IE 5.1. I've
encountered many of the problems I've read that others have, like
various buttons not working on websites. But here's my scary problem:

I use a website of a company I've been doing work for. Until today,
everything was fine, except for a few buttons that didn't work. But all
of a sudden, flash and other interesting parts of pages are just not
showing up. It's not that I'm getting a blank section where they should
be; it's as if they aren't there at all. (I know they are supposed to
be there because either I've seen them before, or I'll read something
like: "Click to hear the examples" but there's nothing to click, and no
examples.)

Any ideas on what's going on, or what to do? Is there some folder I
should delete? (If so, please give me specific info on where to find
it, and what to do!)

Thanks so much!

Hilary

Sounds like a cache problem.

Hi Hilary,

As you don't seem to have had a reply on the list, here is my contribution;

You could try moving Explorer Preferences to the desktop;
(System Folder, Preferences, Explorer Preferences).
Then attempt to open Explorer again.
(Explorer will make a fresh Preferences file).

If that makes no difference, then put the Explorer Preferences back, Apple-Y
(Put Away), replacing the newer (fresh) file.

Next item to try is the Download Cache, move it to the desktop;
(System Folder, Preferences, Explorer, Download Cache).
Try opening Explorer. (Same as above)

Check that the Temporary Files folder is empty.

Or, you may have an Explorer Control folder in the Preferences folder.
Which also has Download Cache & a Temporary Files folder, (which also should
be empty).

But really, you might be better off with another browser...
MSIE was last updated a long time ago (5.1.7), MS have ceased supporting it.

If you NEED to access a website that insists you use MSIE (quite a few banks
do, you'd think that they would know better!), you can ask iCab to pretend
to be IE.
