ASCII characters that don't work in drop downs

Using IE 5.2.3 on OS X (various versions) I'm seeing an issue in drop
downs when they contain characters with accents and such from the high
end of the ASCII set. When the drop down is opened, instead of showing
the text in question, there is just a blank spot in the list. When that
blank spot is selected, then the text shows properly up as the selected
item.

Has anyone else run into this issue and found a way to resolve it?

Here's an example of some characters which don't show up in the drop
down list:

™ (or ™)
à (or à)
æ (or æ)

Thanks for any help,
Abe

ok, I just found a previous thread on here talking about this same
issue but there wasn't a solution. I'm beginning to think there isn't a
work around other than not using a drop down list in these situations.

If that was a viable solution I wouldn't have posted here.
