IE 5.3 for Mac - not good enough for some websites

Hello all,
Has anyone come across a situation whereby the most recent version of IE for
MAC is not acceptable for a website?  My wife is a realtor and the listing
service that all realtors use in our area will not allow her to open and
manage the online forms.  She can use the other areas of the website, just
not the one where you complete online forms.  Any suggestions? Thanks!

IE for Mac is no longer being developed. Try Safari or Mozilla.

I was afraid of that.  This website absolutely requires IE.  In fact, when
you try to use firefox or safari, the website states that it requires IE.
There must be something that can be done, or a tweak somewhere.  Since
Microsoft is no longer developing I guess I'll have to return the mac and
get a crappy pc laptop.  Dell... Here we come... I can not believe that I
will have to sacrifice using a mac because of a browser issue.  That's
bullcrap!

The web site only "states" that it requires IE because the developer who
wrote it decided to say so. That's not necessarily true.

Your first step should be to complain to the sight's developer.

There is. You can probably get around this by changing the browser's
identification string (User Agent) to identify itself as IE. Safari can do
this if you enable the Debug menu via a tool like Safari Enhancer. Similar
options exist for other web browsers as well.

Also keep in mind that Mac IE is completely different from Windows IE. A web
site that claims it only works with Internet Explorer won't necessarily work
with Mac Internet Explorer, even if it were current.

Some browsers can "pretend" to be IE. I do that all the time with
OmniWeb and I know Safari can do it providing you can access the Debug
options. The Debug options are a little difficuot to get to, but I know
apps like Cocktail or TikerTool System can help you out.

Corentin,
Thanks for the help.  Unfortunately, I am not experienced enough to do what
you suggest.  Does anyone have a step by step guide for doing this?  I added
the user agent "thing-a-ma-jig" to firefox and it did not work.  Hence, I am
looking for another solution.  Perhaps what you are mentioning might work
for safari.  Nonetheless, I will require more information to even attempt
this.  I smell a disaster coming forth!!!
Cheers,
TJ

Well folks.... We went back to the mac store and had to purchas virtual pc.
I really hate that we did, but everything is now working.  One of the
'gurus' at the mac store actually went onto the troubled website (using
virtual PC mind you) and looked at the code on the page.  He concurred that
that the page was written in MSXML (not the open version either), and thus
all other browsers would not work.  Interestingly enough, if you had windows
95, it would not work either... What a crock!  Ok, enough bitching about
idiot web programmers.  The end result is that it is now working.  Thank you
all for your assistance.  Cheers.

What a pain... Yeah, unforutunately some webmasters code their pages in
IE only code :-( Yuk!!!
Sorry no other solution did the trick. I was also obviously too late to
come back and try and help you out making other browsers pretend to be
IE (but as it appears, that wouldn't have helped,),

I suggest trying Firefox or Mozilla with the "User Agent Switcher"
extension installed.

http://www.chrispederick.com/work/firefox/useragentswitcher/

Setting the browser type in the switcher to IE 6 seems to work well.

Thank you for the advice.  I did install the user agent switcher that you
provided within the link, but it still did not work.  I can log on (even
with firefox in default mode), but it's this one damn area that's driving me
nuts!  The page will load but the area where you would select the realestate
forms doesn't even show up.  Do you have any other advice?  Thanks again, I
had really hoped that this would work.  Keep throwing ideas this way and
I'll try them.
