Hi all,
I have a PowerMac G5 computer which is running on MAC OS X 10.3.7.

As a new Mac user I was astonished at how long it takes for IE 5.2 (and
Safari for that matter) to download pages using cable. (takes roughly
twice as long as it does on a PC, I've timed it)

I was also astonished to find out that Microsoft were also going to
charge me a fee for any help even though I had purchased their software
separately!

I have no idea if it is an apple mac problem or a microsoft problem.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make it run faster?
Confused.

To make it run a tiny bit faster, buy a newer faster G5.

You might try the new Firefox browser, I hear it is very nice and possibly a
bit faster, but I have not even seen it yet.  It will NOT be 2x faster.

Yes, WWW browsing is very slow on a Mac.  Go back to Windows, it is faster
for rendering web pages.  Jobs was reportedly upset that MS was not going to
support hardware acceleration for MacIE on OSX via Quartz, so he started the
Safari project, hired Darin Adler, and brought him back to Apple to head up
the "better browser" project for OSX.  It sounds like you are not impressed
with the results.

Did you pay Microsoft for MacIE?  It is a free download.  How did you manage
to pay them for it?  Paying for Office does not get you free support for
MacIE.  And be very skeptical of any MacIE support they offer to charge you
money for, they got rid of most of their MacIE expertise, and the rest were
re-assigned to WebTV (and brainwashed).

I am assuming you are using the same exact cable connection and modem, and
that you are doing side by side comparrisons.  Your connection could be
slower now than it was whan you were using a PC.

Slow browser rendering speed has been a Mac issue for a long time.  Your
reported speed difference (2x) is typical, for similar hardware.

You can turn off pictures in your browser prefs <grin>.

Have fun down under...
