I posted here several weeks ago about the same problem I'm still having.
I'm on a G4 Quicksilver/OS 9.2.2/IE 5.1.7. I access several newspapers
daily on the Web, but the Washington Post site is the one that gives me
Error Code -3171 on some (not all) links.
http//:www.appleerrorcodes.com
gives the following gibberish as a description of -3171: "The argument qlen
when the endpoint was bound with Bind was zero." Maybe that explains it to
somebody, but not me.

I cannot answer directly to the problems with the -3171 error code.
However, I can make an opinion on what's happening with Web sites in
general in relation to OS 9/IE 5.x: Web sites are incorporating features
that cannot be rendered using those old browsers.
I've had issues with NASCAR's site as well as Disney's using IE 5.1.7
and Netscape 7.0.2 in OS 9. Yet, when I visit those sites with IE 5.2.3
and Netscape 7.2 in OS X, they render completely. I can only assume that
the browsers in OS X are more up to date with current Web coding schemes
(although, IE 5.2.3 will soon fall behind given that Microsoft is no
longer updating it).
Perhaps switching to a browser more current than IE 5.1.7 in OS 9 would
be able to render these sites. It looks like the iCab 2.9.8 (
http://www.icab.de/dl.php ) will work for those pesky sites. On the
MacUpdate site, it gets high marks for being compatible with banks and
their touchy systems.

Sigh! I was afraid of that, but your response certainly makes sense. I've
been putting off researching newer browsers, but I read abut so many of
them, I haven't a clue where to start. ICab, Opera, Safari, Mozilla etc
etc.
Is there a comparative link out there that lists the current ones? I'm
currently using IE for browsing, etc and OE for mail and newsgroups.
Yeah, yeah, I know. Dinosaur Land.
Help, please,
