I have a Mac powerbook which has just started experiencing a strange
problem. The machine runs just fine for all aps, but when closing
either Internet Explorer, or Outlook Express it takes between 3 and 8
minutes to close the application. During that time, you can hear the
disk activity as if it is going mad. I also discovered that if I open
the Internet options panel from the Apple menu, it also takes a long
time to close the app
down. All other apps appear to close normally, and in fact there are no
errors on the system. I have done a disk scan, and it shows no errors.
It seems that any application that has something to do with the
internet causes this problem. Word, Excel, Adobe etc all behave
normally and close down in a second or so.
Has anyone seen this kind of problem behaviour before, or have any idea
about the cause, or more importantly, the cure. My first thought was a
failing HDD, but everything seems to work fine, and it only seems to be
internet related apps have this problem.

Hi Ron,

With the following message I assume that you are using Mac OS 9.x & I am
suggesting the following troubleshooting steps.

1) Try deleting Internet Preferences, Outlook Preferences & Memory
preferences.
you can find these files under following Location. <Hard disk>/System
Folder/Preferences.

2) Check the memory setting for the applications.
3) Try to increase the Preferred Size memory for the applications.
4) Try quitting all other applications on the system and try working with
the above applications and check.
5) If you are getting crackling noise from the hard disk, then as you said I
suspect the HDD.

Note: If have any damaged tracks on the HDD & if you try to access the
data(applications or files) which is located on those tracks
then we may encounter such errors. (Check what kind of noise you get from
the HDD) .

Last but not the least- Try stopping the application(if it is running) &
then try quitting the application.

Reset PRAM and Desktop folder on your system.

To Reset PRAM hold down Apple+Option+P+R on the keyboard while starting the
system and keep holding down all the 4 keys until you hear 3 start up chime.
After you hear 3 startup chimes release P & R keys and keep holding down
Apple+Option till you get a Dialogue screen which says " Do you want to
rebuild the Desktop Folder"... release the keys and rebuild the Desktop
folder.

Hope this resolves your issue.
