After using a cbs.com home page for a few months, I've tried to choose
a different one, but it keeps going back to the old one. Even the
default home page, msn.com changes to the cbs.com after a couple of
times.  I've tried removing the explorer preferences, but this doesn't
solve the problem.  Any ideas?

If you use OS X 10.0-10.2, first, go to the Apple Menu, and select System
Preferences.  Click the "Internet" pane, and then click the "Web" tab.  Set
the home page as you want it, and click OK.  Quit System Preferences.

In any version, quit all applications, and open Internet Explorer.  Go to
Explorer > Preferences, change your homepage, and click OK.  Then quit
Internet Explorer to save the preferences.

You might also want to try updating to the latest version of Internet
Explorer (5.2.3):
