Hi,
How can I tell the difference in a webpage (using javascript or jsp)
between a user using IE5 in MacOS 9 and MacOS X since the user-agent
header only contains mac_powerpc in both systems??

Why do you need to know this in the first place?
And browsers may even let the user enter arbitrary strings
as "User Agent".

Internet Explorer 5.2 is only for OS X, so you can safely assume anyone
using that is running OS X. At this point it's probably safe to guess that
any users still running Internet Explorer 5.0 or 5.1 for Mac are in the
Classic (9) OS.
