Dan Stephenson - 22 Sep 2008 01:01 GMT Several of the news sites surmise a refresh is coming soon, or rather due by now, but I haven't seen one. Would Apple purposely wait until January to include in the Macworld pitch??

I don't know, but you may want to read the Usenet Marginalization thread and pay specific attention to the subthread concerning the use of apostrophes.

Beat me to the punch... I just assumed the subject was the new MacBook Pro's... um... peripherals or something. :-)
And I have no information about either new MacBook Pros or new MacBook Pro's peripherals. It seems fairly obvious in any case that nothing posted here on the subject is likely to be any more reliable than the rumor sites - probably less so.
After all, the rumor sites occasionally get inside info, though at least as often they have random rumors from people with no actual information. You can sometimes read their forums and watch the posting of someone's unrealistic wishlist be misread by someone else as an actual projection, and thus become a rumor. I don't know how much of that is lack of basic reading comprehension and how much of it is hope grabbing at any straw; probably some combination of both.
But there's no way that anyone with actual information would be posting here. I could point you to the usual rumor sites, but you apparently already know about those. Although their reliabilit yvaries, they are about as good as you are going to get. Otherwise, might as well ask your favorite psychic.

I have stayed out of this debate, but I will jump in to say I think those who feel this way are getting a little compulsive and/or obseesive about this, now. And I will admit, I am guilty of the regarded errant use of the apostrophe going back into the decade popularly encoded as the 1990's. In the scope and context of internet discussion forums and usenet, the rigidity of formal writing techniques in the English language has been allowed to relax. I don't have a problem with it, personally. I still know how to write properly and formally when needed, but in discussion forums, I see it as a text form of talking, and in popular language of the common man, many grammatical errors are allowed, ain't they?
I also have a problem with threads taking an irrelevant right or left turn without signaling. The OP was asking about New MacBook models, not English grammar.

The OP was asking about New MacBook models, not > English grammar. Perhaps you read this in comp.sys.mac.hardware.misc, but he crossposted to comp.sys.mac.system, which is where I read it, and it was off-topic here in the first place. Oh, silly me, I've forgotten that no one is supposed to give a damn about _that_ anymore.

Obviously in this case the apostrophe is standing in for 'fessional' so he's fine.

David Empson - 22 Sep 2008 01:54 GMT > Several of the news sites surmise a refresh is coming soon, or rather > due by now, but I haven't seen one. There are specific rumours that Apple will be releasing new MacBook and MacBook Pro models on October 14th, but the exact date may depend on circumstances and supply considerations.
Historically, Apple has released MacBook Pro updates within about two months of Intel releasing a new batch of suitable processors and/or chipsets.
Intel announced the last such update in July (with a delay before widespread availability), so sticking to the usual timing, Apple should be releasing new laptop models about now, or very soon. iMacs typically follow about a month later, and the Mac Mini is overdue for an update (the last one coincided with an iMac update in August 2007).
It is very likely that any new models will be released on a Tuesday, as that is the usual pattern for Mac releases. That means the likely dates coming up are September 23rd, September 30th, October 7th or October 14th.
They might want to do a "special event" to announce the new models, because they are rumoured to have redesigned cases and may have other new features. If so, we'll know about it roughly a week in advance (but won't know the specifics until the day of the event).
If they decide to just release the new models without a special event, then we won't know about it until the day of the release.
> Would Apple purposely wait until January to include in the Macworld > pitch?? Unlikely. They want to sustain the growth in Mac sales (and laptop sales in particular), and want to start selling them in quantity before the holiday season. If they wait until January, sales will drop off markedly as everyone who can afford to wait will be delaying their purchase until the anticipated new models appear.
In past years, Apple have often released new products in October and November. It is rare for them to release a new product in December, partly due to the holiday chaos, and partly so they have something to show off in January at MacWorld Expo.

Would Apple purposely wait until > January to include in the Macworld pitch?? Finally the new MacBook Pro''''''s are out, but UNFORTUNATELY they have the super-glare screens. Their ads and videos practically highlight (as it were) the glare.
On the other hand, the previous generation are available at a lower price through their Clearance sales page. The new trackpad would've been cool, but, I use a mouse 90% of the time. So I've bought a 2.5GHz machine and can take solace in that the wait wasn't wasted in that I got a discount.
