Connecting to my wife's Brother printer

Howard Brazee - 14 Sep 2008 16:25 GMT My wife recently replaced her all-in-one with a new Brother MFC-240C. I can see the URL for that printer on her settings. (Queue name=Brother_MFC_240C)
I downloaded a driver program on my computer and ran it, but I still can't find her printer.
Whenever I reboot, a Device Selector window comes up with the following options:
Connection Type [Network/USB]
[]Specify your machine by address IP Address:
[]Specify your machine by name mDNS service name
[Browse]
==========
[]Register your computer with the "Scan To" functions at the machine Display Nammme
"Scan To" Button PIN number for this computer [] Enable PIN number protection PIN number ("0" - "9", 4 digits) Retype PIN number
==============================
Besides repeating "PIN number" 4 times as though the "N" didn't mean "Number", I haven't been able to figure this out. I don't now of any PIN, nor of any display name.
The Browse button opens up a window with nothing to select. I use Connection Type of "Network", and try pasting the URL as IP Address, since I don't know the real IP Address. There is no space to fill in the mDSN service name - I suppose that's what the Browse button's supposed to find.
Could someone translate for me?

(Queue > name=Brother_MFC_240C) What you need to do is turn on Printer Sharing on her Mac, then your Mac should simply see it listed as a Bnjour printer. It sounds like you're trying to do something entirely different.

I was trying hard to give everything I saw in the software I was using, and missed that. I did say "all-in-one", and mentioned that one of the switches was "Scan To", and that I didn't know how to complete that particular set-up.
Then I asked for help translating what it said. I didn't know I needed to say why I wanted this translation. Guessing how to avoid getting responses such as yours isn't the easiest part of this process.

If *I* were trying to do what you're trying to do and needed help, my subject would be about trying to scan to a scanner connected to a networked Mac, and my description would say I'm able to print to the device but cannot scan to it.
I get the impression you believe you're providing a lot more information than you really are. The fact that this keeps happening should tell you that's not the case. Plenty of other people regularly post about issues they're having without anyone, myself included, understanding them.

I get the impression that that word doesn't mean what you think it means. Saying that you want to scan instead of wanting to print is hardly a detail.

Then I went downstairs and tried a different installation program as instructed. My post shows the details where I got stuck.

> (I can print on it, but > that ability is only for when I run out of ink downstairs). I don't think that you can do that with a MFC-240C. I have a MFC-440CN (note the 'N'...) and it prints and faxes and scans over the network, no problem. But I suspect that the drivers which allow it to do that will not work with a 240C. You could go to Brother's site and download the brxtwain310_5.dmg file, that's the latest scanner drivers for the 440CN and I _know_ they work over the network with _my_ unit. If they don't with yours, you're outta luck.

Now I have to look around to uninstall it from trying to run every time I reboot. At first glance I'm not seeing it in my applications folder, but I should find it.

The window is labeled "Device Selector", but I am not finding it using Spotlight. Is there a place where I can check programs that automatically start when I reboot?

Device Selector is supposed to launch automatically on startup. It is supposed to put a cute little blue screen with a Brother logo and 'Control Center version 2.4.3' and a ring of assorted Brother icons on it, which vanishes in maybe five seconds. It's also supposed to put a menu headed by the ring of icons onto your menubar. If you click on the menu, you're supposed to see several options, one of which is 'Open'. Select 'Open' and the Device Selector opens, and you can set your Brother device to use either USB or Ethernet, and can specify the Ethernet IP and subnet masks and such. Once that is done you should be able to print and scan over the network (if you selected Ethernet and properly specified the settings) or USB.
If Device Selector does _not_ automatically launch, you can find it at:
Library/Printers/Brother/Utilities/DeviceSelector/DeviceSelector.app
Launch it, and the main window will open and you can do the settings.
