Hi all - I have two nearly identical Beige G3s, OS 9.1. One exhibits a
very odd startup problem. The progress bar begins moving ok, then just
before the first extension loads, it freezes. If I restart, sometimes it
freezes again, sometimes it starts fine. I'd say it freezes on about 70%
of startups. I actually swapped the hard drives between the two machines,
and the same problem exists on that same machine. Any ideas? Thanks.

Actually, I'm still running System 7:

And System 6 on another old Mac SE... : )

Not that your reply is any help with the problem :| , but:
As long as you don't need to use a curent web browser, a maxed out Beige
G3 with OS 9.1 is a super-duper setup. 5 drive bays, built-in scsi,
ide/ata. Add a usb a/o fw card and there ya go.

Since everyone else seems obsessed with debating the merits of life in
the classic lane, I'll try to actually help you with your problem.
You didn't specify whether your drives are IDE or SCSI, so I will guess
IDE. Since you already tried my first idea, to swap drives, that
eliminates the drive mech itself. So now we turn to the IDE interface.
It appears that the IDE may be going bad. Have you tried switching IDE
controllers? The Beige G3 can only boot off IDE masters, but there are
two channels. Your CD is likely connected to the second one as a
master. If so, try disconnecting the CD and connecting the HD on its
ribbon cable. If you solve the problem, then you know the other IDE
controller is bad. Since the IDE's are hardwired, the only repair
option is to replace the motherboard (not difficult, I've done that
myself).
Another bypass option is to get a SCSI board and hook a SCSI drive to it
and live that way.
And speaking of SCSI, if that is what your boot drive is on, then you
can look for a replacement PCI SCSI board. Just make sure you get a
compatible replacement. Some machines came with a SCSI-II board, some
with a regular SCSI. Supposedly, there is a way to connect SCSI-II
drives to SCSI and they'll talk down to the elder controller, and
conversely there is supposed to be a way to get a SCSI-II controller to
host SCSI drives. I have attempted to make this happen in the past and
failed, so I now just say to make sure you replace SCSI with SCSI or
SCSI-II with the same.
Likewise as above, if you are on a SCSI I or II drive, you can get a
used IDE cheap these daze and jump over to that as your boot option.
