I have the original 350MHz PowerMac "Sawtooth", Graphite Case. I also
have a DP500MHz CPU Board, which I want to put in it. Mac OS9 has no
problem, but OSX does. What do I need to do here?

Tell us what problem OS X has and what version of OS X that is, for
starters.

The brand of the CPU upgrade would be useful to know, too, and whether
the OP has gone to their manufacturer's web site for any specific
instructions, and possibly drivers, for using the card with OS X.

Good point. I assumed he was trying to move a board from a Gig-E 2x500
G4 into a Sawtooth case and was having trouble. Didn't think about
upgrade cards.

And it never occurred to _me_ that he might be moving a board from
another G4 into the case.

Woah, Nelly! Hang on!!!
The 2x500MHz board came from another mac, the Gigabit Ethernet model.
That mac doesn't work though.
On a side note, I installed Mac OS9 with the 2x500 CPU, and now I
can't boot into OSX with the original! A circle with a line through it
(a "prohibitory sign", according to Apple) appears.

Let's start from the beggining...
Gregory> OSX 10.4 "Tiger, the latest version that will run on this
computer without hacking the CD. When booting, a black rectangle
unfurls from the top of the apple logo to the bottom. Don't get the
spinning bars.

Mike> Don't know the brand, came with another mac.

Gregory again> It ain't an update card.

Mike again> Good guess... CORRECT! DING!

Now I just want to get back to OSX with my original CPU board!

Hope this answers any questions you have.

This appears to be yet another drive-by post from Google Groups.
I'm so glad I don't see them anymore!

Um, he _did_ respond, and the same day Greg and I posted. You didn't see
it, of course, nor did I, since I would only have seen it via someone's
follow-up, and neither Greg nor anyone else responded to it. The point
is, though, that the guy did monitor the thread and post again, and he's
the one waiting for a reply.

You get pretty bored sometimes on Sundays, don't you?  ;-)

Oh did he?  My bad then.  : )

How ironic.  : )

Well actually, I am just today subscribing to this news group, which is
why I even bothered reading this thread.

Carry on!

Maybe you were bored and that's why you subscribed. ;-)

I don't see the information necessary for diagnosis anywhere in this
topic. No verbose boot dialog, no list of permissions that have been
fixed or resisted fixing, and from the order of installation OS X.4
needs to be confirmed as the start-up disk and may need to be
repaired, since OS X is notoriously hinky and X.4 (in my own, limited,
experience) particularly doesn't peacefully co-exist with an OS 9
bootable system -- requiring OS 9 be modified by OS X so that it only
runs in Classic mode.
Boot from your OS X.4 install DVD, select the OS 10.4 system folder as
your startup disk, and run disk utility to repair it.

Alternatively, wipe the hard-drive, install OS 9, update (particularly
any BIOS updates), and then install OS 10.4 again. After it boots OS X
the first time, run Disk Utility and fix permissions. Download the
update package, and after installing it, fix permissions again.

When you ask for help next time, please identify your hardware, your
software, what the problem presents itself as, and anything you've
already tried to fix it. You may want to browse for past topics on
your issue, too (such as, in this case, OS 10.4 boot). Some people may
not always give direct advice, but bear in mind it was the weekend and
senses of humor constrained by a grim work-week may come out to play.
When you see something like that going on, it often means the advice
you're asking for has recently been posted elsewhere, and the jesters
think you should've seen it. I can't say that this is the case every
time, but it often seems so to me. Personally, I've bought a few
hundred dollars of OS X books, only to have them walk off while I
wasn't looking; but they were helpful to me while I had them.

There's no boot messages! I said, there's a "prohibitory sign"!
