Hi,

I've looked and looked for an answer on this...

Directly from the apple store I bought an imic (first generation white
one) and shure microphone. The input levels through the system (sound
control panel and imovie) are feeble, stronger than line-in, but still
feeble. (the levels are maxed). But if I use the stupid software that
comes with imic (final vinyl) I get a strong signal.

I bought it to narrate imovies within imovie. Does anyone know why
this isn't working?

10.4 G5 imac, imovie HD 5

Thanks!!!

Do you have the iMic switch (line-level - mic-level) in the correct position?

Yes, but something is working, because the "final vinyl" software gets
a very clear signal. I'd say the OSX system gets about 1/3 the volume.
About halfway between using the mic directly in the line-in in the
back of the imac and the "final vinyl" volumes. I hope that isn't
confusing.

I'm sort of upset that apple sells a kit like that and it doesn't work
with the ilife suite. I can't see anyone being able to use that mic
unless they shout into it.

Any ideas? Could it be something particular with 10.4?

Run Audio MIDI Setup (Utilities folder, set "Properties For" to the
iMic, and make sure it is set to 24-it with the volume sliders all the
way to the right.  If the volume is still too low, contact Griffin and
tell them which model microphone you are using.

You could try a USB microphone,

<Blue Microphones Snowball Microphone>

Wow, another slider... it was nearly maxed already, and there wasn't a
24-bit setting, only 16-bit and lower. I have two decent microphones
here and both are behaving the same.

Thanks for the info, I'm still bummed. I contacted Griffen.

Thanks!!!
