I have Time Machine set to back up every 2 hours.
But my LaCie drive starts running in between backups. I haven't
figured out what turns it on - no backups are made. Sometimes it
happens when I open finder, but not always. Maybe Spotlight looks at
it.
Is there any way to determine what starts it, and tell it to stop?
Can I free up my Finder from showing this drive all the time in the
panel in the left, but to show all of my other drives?

Does it happen every 15 minutes? See my thread in comp.sys.mac.system
about this. Lots of people have noticed this, we're not sure what it
is, although Spotlight is a common suspect.

Sometimes I think so - but I don't think it is that consistent.

I just dragged mine out of the sidebar and it vanished forever.

Mine just vanished as well. I then tested by dragging it back there
(from my hard drive in finder) and then off again.
