My experience with Apple refurbs:
I bought a refurb Mac Mini G4 a couple of years ago. It has been running
fine without any trouble, 24/7 all that time.
My son got a refurb iBook G3 about 3 years ago, and it ran fine. Even
survived some physical abuse by a thief, and still ran after the police
got it back from the thief.
OTOH, my daughter got a refurb iBook G3 about 3 years ago, and it had
some issues. It ran, and still runs, but had occasional hiccups. of
course a new machine can have hiccups too.
Apple gives a same-as-new warranty on the refurbs, so you should be
pretty safe. I think it is a good way to go.
