This is not exactly a Mac issue but the monitor do connected to
my iMac, so it is related. :-) I use a Neovo F-419 as my iMac
second monitor through Mini-DVI to VGA adapter. The monitor has
been working for almost 2 year - 1 year as iMac second monitor -
without any issue.
This morning, without any warning, the monitor failed to wake up
from sleep, is stayed dark. Actually, when I woke up my Mac's
monitors, I saw a flash of the correct display content, then the
monitor went dark again. I tried several things and eventually
pull the monitor out from the Mac, but it it consistently
flashing up for a moment then going dark. Seems like the
backlight failed to start.
So my question:
1. Is there anything can be done with this monitor?
2. Any advice on what causing this? Any suggestion on what
should I do to prevent this happening again in the future? The
monitor do connect through a surge protector - albeit an old
one. As far as I know there is no electric discontinuity last
night: all electronic with clocks stays on, and the iMac
connected to the same surge protector still OK.
Thanks!

It sounds like it isn't warming up enough and/or has a cracked solder
joint. I've seen this before, and the monitor worked after warming it
up externally. How you do that is up to you: hair dryer, dry sauna,
oven, or whatever. If that works, it may end up being a persistent
problem that requires you to leave the monitor on all the time to keep
it from cooling down. It's up to you whether the energy wasted in doing
that and the hassle of reheating after a power outage is worth it
compared to buying a new monitor.
