Bought a 3rd generation ipod and am having problems with it.
I have the latest itunes 7.5 on my mac powerbook and when I plug the
ipod in its not recognised, my external dvd firewire burner is though
so I know its not the port.
Have only one port so plugged the ipod in by daisychain and straight
to the mac still nothing, looked on the net and cant find anyway of
getting it working although I can listen to the music via headphones
that is already on the ipod, notice that the ipod has been formatted
for windows but havent got a windows machine to try it on.

Any ideas?
I presume the firewire lead is ok as when I plug it in it shows
charging on the ipod.

Originally had leopard on and have even gone so far as putting tiger
back on and updating it but still nothing.

system:
Tiger
itunes 7,5 and updated
ipod 3rd gen with click wheel
powerbook G4 titanium

Third gen has the dock connector (I think), so you can also attach it via
USB with the correct cable.  I'd try that.  Also, you might
Google for "ipod diagnostics" and try running them--there's some
peculiar combination of keypresses to get them running on the
ipod.  It is always possible that the unit you bought is busted--we've
had probably six iPods that quit working for one reason or
another.  They're definitely not a long-lived piece of hardware
(at least in my experience).

I assume the ipod does power up, right?

Good luck.

I have tried the stand alone updaters bur because the ipod is not
being recognised by the mac I cant do anything with it.
I have found out now that when I check in the settings it has been
windows formatted, have contacted the previous owner who confirmed it.
I have sent away for a ipod usb cable to try in the hope that at least
it will be recognised and I can format in mac mode.
