Once or twice I have experienced that my iMac has failed to start up.

Hits the power button. Screen shows white/grey picture with apple in
the middle. Then nothing.

Power off and on again and everything is OK.

I have verified disks and fixed permissions. That's basicly all I know
that I can do (New Mac user).

Where would I start to search if this problems comes back?

Odds are it's not permissions, it doesn't sound like it's getting far
enough for permissions to matter.

First thing to check / replace is the PRAM battery.

If you have a voltmeter handy measure the battery voltage.  Anything
over 3V is good.

If that's okay try resetting the PMU (Power Management Unit).

What kind of iMac (G3, G4, G5, Intel)?

I wrote all system info in the first posting:

Model Name:     iMac
Model Identifier:       iMac5,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed:        2.16 GHz
Number Of Processors:   1
Total Number Of Cores:  2
L2 Cache (per processor):       4 MB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed:      667 MHz
Boot ROM Version:       IM51.0090.B09

- I can't disassemle the iMac and meassure battery.

But resetteing PRAM and PMU sounds like an idea? But how?

Forget the battery. This is a new machine.

Zapping the PRAM is pressing 4 keys (command alt p r) at start while
you hear the start chime.
Forget the PMU - this is a desktop computer and a worse PMU would show
other symptoms.
After reseting the pram please try to boot in verbose mode (pressing v
or command-v) while you hear the start chime.
Post the last message you can read form the screen here.
I guess, if it hangs while gray screen with spinning pizza (or not),
there might be something wrong with your disk.
If that is true, you have to start in single user mode (pressing s or
command s while you hear the start chime) and than run fsck -fy from
the command line. Try to boot again.
