Bootable External HD for MacBook Pro

I'm trying to create an external firewire bootable HD for my daughters
MacBook Pro. I initialized the drive for intel processor (GUID partition
table). I followed Silverkeeper's instructions for making a bootable HD
like I did for PowerPC Macs. But when I hold down the option key on
bootup, I don't see the external HD. If I choose the external HD as the
startup disk and restart, the MacBook Pro will boot from the external
firewire drive. Do Intel Macs have a different procedure for selecting
which device to boot from? Thanks for any info.

I use a cheapo USB 2 drive enclosure (FireExpress) and it's fine. It has all
to do with the chipset of the drive enclosure. Some simply don't do booting.

This is one of the great options for the Mac when it comes to backing
up, creating an archive, etc.
SuperDuper:

A solid product in my humble experience.

Ditto.  I use it extensively on 3 Macs and have never had problems
restoring from volumes made with SuperDuper.

Thanks everyone who recommended SuperDuper. I downloaded it and created
a bootable external HD with no problems. I gladly paid the shareware
fee; It is worth every penny.

Seeing as no one has answered your question: The Pro uses the same key. Sorry
I have no reason as to why it's not working.

Tim, I ended up buying SuperDuper! which worked like a charm. It backed
up the internal HD and created a bootable volume which shows up when
pressing the option key at startup.
