Scanners for Mac

I am looking for a Mac OS X compatible scanner, duplex, with sheet
feeder, and as compact as possible. It is going to be in an office with
three secretaries, and used almost exclusively for B&W administrative
archiving.

I found a suitable candidate in the Canon DR-2580C, but the brochure is
not very explicit about Mac support or compatibility (a contact with the
local Canon representatives was answered with "due to recent changes in
organisation we are unable to deal with your request", and some general
Canon's URLs). Agfa does not make scanners anymore, Microtek appears to
have been swallowed by Taiwan's Avision, with no local support, and
Epson and HP have not answered.

(We have a Canon flatbed, a CanoScan 3200F, and it has been a nightmare
to install correctly in a multiuser environment. In the end, only the
user that has installed the driver can use it; I assume it has to do
with some file permissions, but Canon was of no help at all.)

Good experiences, anybody?

Be sure that any scanner you get will run with VueScan
<http://www.hamrick.com> without having to install any software from
the scanner maker.
Often, if there is a change in OSX that require a fix to scanner
software, the scanner maker only provides updates for scanner they are
currently selling.  They already have the money from owners of older
scanners, so don't bother to support them.

If your scanner will work with VueScan, it will still be usable since
VueScan updates make all its supported scanners work with the latest
OSX.

The software from some scanner makers seems to break with even minor
OSX update, and if they decide not to update that particular scanner's
software, the scanner becomes useless if it won't work with other
software.

My scanner is an Agfa SnapScan e42.  There have been no software
updates since OSX 10.1, since Agfa abandoned the low cost scanner
market, but it still works with OSX 10.4.10.  If some future OSX update
breaks it, I have the option of VueScan.

Thanks for the answer. I might get VueScan for the flatbed quite soon,
as the Mac OS X 10.5 release is bound to create havoc...

But VueScan is supposed to work with "flatbed and film scanners", not
with the high-speed document "feed-through" scanners. And I cannot see
the Canon DR-2580C mentioned for example, neither in their supported nor
unsupported models list.

VueScan will work with the Epson GT-2500 and GT-30000 scanners
<http://www.epson.co.uk/products/product_hub/Product_Listing_Scanners.htm>
which can handle up to 30 pages per minute.

Thanks again!. I'll take a look at the GT-2500 model.
