I consider LaCie harddisks the best but not their short (USB or Firewire)
cables. LaCie may save 17 cents making cables so short that one has to
place the harddisk very close to the computer thus cramming the desk.
IEEE permits 4.5 meter, but 1.5 meter should be enough in most cases.
Google finds under
laCie cable short 278 000 Hits
LaCie (and their dealers) tell laconically:
Go buy a cable
This doesn't need a comment but rises the question:
Didn't those 278 000 posters never write to LaCie?
10 000 would perhaps be already enough,-)

I have four external LaCie drives, each connected with a LaCie supplied
cable. Three of the drives are connectied n a firewire 800 chain and one is
connected by firewire 400. The firewire 800 drives are on a shelf below the
desktop on which the computer sits, and the firewire 400 drive sits next to
the computer. All of the cables were of sufficient length.

This Firewire cable and the other USB cable are 60 cm long - no chance to
reach a shelf. 278 000 obvoiusly have the same problem. This also doesn't
tell that LaCie ships shorter cables to Europe/ Germany.

This comes under the "different strokes" category. I prefer short cables
when I daisy chain devices together. I have a drawer full of long USB and
Firewire cables. Before buying some LaCie devices, I purchased some short
cables for that purpose. Now that I know LaCie provides them, I will be more
liekly to buy their products in the future.
