I was given a G4 tower without hardrive or OS. So i'm trying to
install a hardrive and load OS X. I get through the installation to
the point where it asks me to select the drive I want the OS to go
onto, but there arent' any drives to select. The box is empty. Do I
have to format the hardrive in another computer before I load the OS
onto it? Any advice at all is appreciated. Thanks!

If you have retail install discs for OS X and have booted from that disc
then use Disk Utility to format the drive first. You do not have to use
another computer to do so. When selecting the disk format use HFS+
(extended).

You can partition or intialize the drive using Disk Utility while booted
from the installer CD. But if the installer can't see any drives,
there's a good chance that you have a hardware problem, such as an
incorrectly jumpered drive, a bad IDE cable or power connector, or a
defective built-in disk controller. Some gift horses have no teeth.
