I was given a G4 tower without hardrive or OS. So i'm trying to
install a hardrive and load OS X. I get through the installation to
the point where it asks me to select the drive I want the OS to go
onto, but there arent' any drives to select. The box is empty. Do I
have to format the hardrive in another computer before I load the OS
onto it? Any advice at all is appreciated. Thanks!

You can format the drive with the Install CD. Select "Disk Utility"
from the menubar and follow the onscreen instructions.

And more than likely the hard drive is currently formatted for a Windows
machine, and so will need formatting.
Best option is HFS+ (which you certainly want) Journalled (if you have a
sufficiently current OS X).

Make sure you have drive's jumper (a hardware setting) set correctly. If
it is the only drive it should be set to "master".
