Dealnews.com is offering an external ide drive enclosure w/FW and USB2
for $25 and I'm thinking of going for it.
Does anyone here have an opinion on the quietest hard drives available?
Thx in advance.

If you plan to boot from this enclosure via FireWire, first find out the
brand of bridge chip it contains.

Any 3.5 inch drive will generate some noise and vibration, but Samsung
and Hitachi drives are generally quieter than Seagates.

Plenty of resources online. Try searching for "quiet PC", "silent PC"
or even "quiet hard drive".
You will want to spring for a drive with fluid bearings (almost standard
now). Also, check manufacturer sites, since they often post the Bels
for idle and seek.
I recall I replaced an IDE drive that was bothering me with a Seagate
based on an hour of research. Very quiet.

Once I shut down my computers, I find the hard drives, regardless of
make, are extremely quiet :o) .

It can be hard to retrieve the data off those drives when they are not
powered up.
