That's correct. AVI is a container. It combines audio and video in any
number of formats depending on which codec you decide to use. Many
codecs are available for the Mac, but, saddly, not all. You have to
know which codec was used to encode the video. I doesn't matter if
you're trying to play it on an iPod, a Dell box or an Xbox.., each
supports only a limited number of formats.
MPEG-4 is a well-defined standard supported by many vendors, including
Apple. MOV is a QuickTime codec that is available for both Mac and
Windows. It does indeed take a long time to convert videos from one
format to another and, unfortunately, every conversion adds just that
much degradation. If you've ever wondered why YouTube videos look so
bad, it's because the conversion from whatever-format to Flash takes
its toll.
It's just like wondering why your Xbox game doesn't play on your
GameBoy, but at least with video there are ways to get from point A to
point B. VisualHub is a great program for performing video conversions,
but, again, if you don't have the codec, you won't be able to do
anything.
Welcome to the real world! Just wait until you you want to convert PAL
video to NTSC... ugly doesn't even begin to describe it!
