Yesterday for the first time in about a month I hooked up my FW HD
(LaCie) to my iMac 17" G5, OSX 10.3.9,  and did some back ups without a
problem.  this am the computer would not start up. After unhooking every
external, and re starting several times the problem was the FW HD.  This
had not occurred before.

If I hook up the FW HD after the computer is going there does not seem
to be a problem.

The FW HD seems to be recording material OK and is making no strange
sounds.

Does this situation indicate a potential problem?

It might be a problem in the system, if the Firewire extensions are
corrupted, or blocked in one or the other way. I have had the problem
myself once. It disappeared after running the latest 10.3.9 Combo Update
once more.

Hm, I'm not likely to think so, if you can copy, paste, move or delete
in quite normal ways, but there can of course be a smaller problem with
either the B-tree or Extend B-tree, so if you have DiskWarrior 3.0.3 or
later, you should try to make a new directory file with this by booting
from the DiskWarrior CD.

cheers, Erik Richard

Make sure your iMac's boot disk is the Startup Disk (System Preferences
- Startup Disk).  If it isn't, it may be attempting to boot off the FW
drive but it may not be a valid boot drive.
