Does any one know if it is possible to have differing video mirroring
resolutions?

i.e. is is possible for the built in monitor to be 1600x1000 and the
mirrored video to be 1024x768?

Basically, I am considering getting one of the new imacs, but I need to
mirror in 4x3 mode (for our projector) but I would like to utilize the
full built in display (16x9)

thanks in advance

Mirroring is pixel to pixel, so you will only use the center 1024x768
of your 1680x1050 screen if the external display is 1024x768.
