I got a USB2.whatever PCI card for five bucks. My Mac is older and has
the 1.1 ports. The card had no drivers; is it possible to install it
and just have it work, or do I need drivers? If I need drivers, are
there any open source drivers available?

Are you talking about a Mac running OS X 10.2.8 or later? Drivers for
USB 2.0 cards have been standard with OS X since the 10.2.8 update.
