I have a MacPro with two 500 GB drives. When I initially set the system
up, I planned to just use the second drive as a simple backup.
But I have decided that what I really need is a RAID 1 configuration,
using both drives mirrored. That is, have both drives be bootable, and
mirrored, so if one fails I can get back up and working right away on
the second drive.
I assume that I will have to (1) back up all my data on one or more
external drives, (2) reload OS X (10.4.8) in a RAID 1 configuration, (3)
re-install OS X in a RAID 1 configuration, (4) reload my data and
reinstall all non-OS X applications.
From the docs that Apple supplies, I do not know how to do this when I
reboot from the DVD.
Any pointers to better docs? Thanks.

If you boot from the DVD, you can start Disk Utility from there. With
Disk Utility you can format both drives and make a RAID from them. After
you've done that, the RAID will just look like one disk to the Mac, and
you can install MacOS X on it as you would on any drive.
