Hello all, I just purchased a new quad-core Mac Pro and am having
problems with OS X picking up the keyboard. I have plugged both the Pro
and my old G4 Mac into a LinXcel KVM switch, and both pick up both the
keyboard and mouse (which is plugged into the kb's USB port). However,
in the OSX setup wizard where it says to press keys so that the
keyboard can be identified, it just sits there at 'identifying
keyboard...'  The mouse works fine, cursor moves no problem, and the
keyboard works, because I pressed Shift and the Z key, but I can't get
past this part of the setup. Any ideas? Is it the KVM switch that
bollocksing everything up?

You pressed Shift *and* the Z key?  You were supposed to press just *one*
key (the Z key, if that's the one next to the shift key on your
keyboard).  Then the next step is to press one key next to the other
shift key.

I didn't press them concurrently. First, I pressed the left Shift key
as instructed, and it picked it up and went on. Second, it instructed
me to 'Press the key immediately to the right of the Shift key on the
left of [my] keyboard...' which is the Z key, obviously. I did that,
and it just sits there.

I have been through that a number of times with third-party keyboards,
and I have never been "instructed" to press a shift key.  I press exactly
two keys: first the key to the right of the left shift key, and then the
key to the left of the right shift key.  It works fine.

It's the Apple-branded keyboard that came with my new Quad, so I don't
know what the problem is...

I do not know what a > LinXcel KVM switch <  is, but if it is some sort
of USB hub, your problem is that on boot the hub does not seem to be
loaded until late in the process and the computer just does not see the
key board until too late for keystroke's wanted at the time of boot.

There are two ways to spell Ockham/Occam.  Britannica prefers the former.
