Ethernet Fried (G4/800/DT)

Im using a Powermac G4/800 Desktop (Quicksilver 2002), with a cable
modem.  Friday night I had ligtning damage to a number of things in my
house, and one of the things apparently damaged is the eithernet port on
my Mac.  The networks control panel shows that no cable is connected,
even when a cable is connected directly to the cable modem (which I had
to replace, it was dead as a brick!).  I also fried the ethernet port on
my HP laptop (which I am using to send this message after obtaining a
PCMCIA ethernet card), both were hooked to the same router which I still
don't know if it works.

Everything was turned off at the UPS when this occurred, fortunately I
was not home, otherwise I may have been fried too!

My question is, how easy or hard is this to fix or get fixed?  Will they
be able to fix this at the Apple store (Rockingham Park is only a few
miles from me), and will it be worthwhile to do so. Or should I get them
to give me a note that it's not repairable (and the same thing for the
HP), and get my homeowner's insurance to buy me 2 new computers for the
$500 deductible?

Thanks for your help

You have PCI slots, so plug in a cheap $5 EtherNet 10/100 card.
Done.  Find one at your local PC store, or at your choice of onlne
parts place.  If it claims to be Mac compatible  the more better.  I
had one in my old Gigabit Mac when the built-in Ethernet started acting
wonky.

The Mac salesman at CompUSA suggested I try one of their $20 ethernet
cards, it did not work.  It was not recognized at all, so I will be
retuning it.  If anyone knows of a cheap card that does work with a Mac???

Yes. I'm using one right now in a PowerMac 9600.

See if you can find a D-Link DFE530TX+ 10/100Ethernet PCI card.

Drivers are here:
<http://www.dlink.com/redirectorSupport.asp?supportLink=downloads>

I've only used the drivers for OS 9.x with the card, but they work fine. I've
no experience with their drivers for OS X (if that's what you're using).

WARNING WARNING WARNING
D-link also sells a card designated "DFE530TX" (note that there is no "+").
This card DOES NOT WORK on a Mac. You MUST have the card with the "+" as part
of the product number.

Unfortunatly those drivers do not support 10.4.7, which is what I am
using, they only list thru 10.2.8.  I called D-Link tech support, and
they said that they will eventually have the proper drivers, but for now
it would be best to return the card and get something else.

Any other ideas, anyone?  I thought of Asante, but there products no
longewr appear to be available at either CompUSA or at the Apple Store,
both of which used to carry them.

Go to www.sonnettech.com  They have a product called Presto Gigabit.
This is a PCI card that is supposed to work with anything later that
10.2.  Does not work with OS9, if that is a concern.  Check it out.
Then shop around for the best price.

I used a Sonnet Encore and a Sonnet ATA/133 card and have been great
products.

Yup, that's what I did, I ordered one today.  I should have it by early
next week.  It is more money that what I was hoping for, it's $79, but
it looks like it will solve my problem.  I don't have a need for
gigabit, but I went with what's available.

Yes, I know Sonnet products have an excellent reputation.  And at this
point, all I want to do is go back to using my Mac, being stuck with
Windoze is driving me crazy!

Thanks so much to everyone who responded to this thread for your help.

Far cheaper than a motherboard swap!
