External Firewire drive stalled

I got my new external firewire drive in a bad state. Perhaps it is a
hardwire problem.  I have a Generic brand enclosure with Prolific
PL-3507 chipset for a ATA/ATAPI 3.5" hard drive up to 300GB or above.
PL-3507 is a high performance combo bridge solution for connecting
USB2.0 interface and./or IEEE1394 interface to ATA or ATAPI data
storage devices.

I tried to partition the firewire drive into 4 partitions.  The first
three went OK.  The fourth never mounted.  I copied some data onto the
first drive.  I got a message saying that I filled the first drive.

I restarted the system.  My system restarted:
1) Got the message, "Waiting for local disks"
2) Waited overnight with same message in morning.

System will boot OK without the external harddrive.

Any ideas?  I did see some hints on the internet that I may have a bad
chipset.

Is the a terninal partitioner?

Try booting up without the drive, then connecting it.  If Disk Utility
sees it, try setting it up again from scratch.  Don't try mounting it
(if it doesn't mount automatically), don't try repairing it, just start
over.  If you have problems the second time around, return it if you
can.
